8. Jubilee Hedge

Adjacent to the permissive footpath above the vineyard, you will see a wooden sign marking the ‘Jubilee Hedge’ that runs alongside the Cherry Garden Vineyard up to Buzzards View. This native hedgerow was planted as part of the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in 2022. The families of Chilworth village came together at the Manor House for music and picnics and to lend a hand in the planting of the nearly 200m hedge. The hedge consists of 1000+ individual plants which are a traditional native English mix of hawthorn, blackthorn and maple plants.

Queen Elizabeth was a great friend of Lady Heald who occupied Chilworth from the 1940s until 2005, she would often come to visit to play tennis on the lawn court in the gardens. For those of you completing the short walk, Sir Lionel and Lady Heald lived here with their family for over 60 years. Sir Lionel was Attorney General in Churchill’s government, and Lady Heald was a pillar of Surrey society and devoted her life to many charitable causes. The late Queen would become the royal face of Wimbledon after being appointed as a patron in 1952.

For Children:

Did you know: Queen Elizabeth like all Kings and Queens since George II started the tradition in 1748 had two birthdays. Her actual birthday was 21st April, but her ‘official’ birthday was held on the second Saturday of June – when the weather was better!
