August - Update on the Vines: First Sign of Veraison at Chilworth Manor Vineyard!

First Signs of Veraison at Chilworth Manor Vineyard!

As July shades into August, for a vine grower and the vines alike it is a key moment. This time is known as the Lag Phase, a period roughly halfway between flowering and harvest. Now, we’re seeing the first flush of colour across our black Pinot grapes (this stage is called Verasion), a sure sign that ripening has begun in earnest.

Walking the rows during this stage of the vines growth cycle our thoughts, however, are also on protecting our precious crop as word spreads among the pigeon population of Chilworth Manor Vineyard's high quality grapes!

This year, in an effort to reduce the noise impact of more traditional bird scarers such as bangers and gas guns, we will be trialling our (not quite Star Wars!) laser deterrent during daylight hours – a technology that has been used extensively in New Zealand vineyards. It works by tracking across the ground and disturbing any birds on the vineyard floor or perched in the canopy. Programmed to operate strictly within the boundary of the vine rows, it is entirely safe and poses no risk to walkers or riders along the permissive footpath or, indeed, visitors to the Cellar Door and Watch House.

If only the badgers came out during the day as well…!
