The layers of soil beneath our vineyard give our grapes their unique taste comparable with a Provence style pale rosé. Chilworth Manor Brut Rosé 2018 vintage is made from Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes which started their life growing on a sheltered and gentle south-facing slope adjacent to the Manor. The naturally fertile sandy loam lies on a base of sandstone, part of the Hythe formation.
The grapes were planted in 2014 and although a first harvest was achieved in 2016, we decided to make them benefit from another full growing season before bringing our first Still Rosé to market to ensure better quality and maturity of the wine. The grapes for our 2018 Brut Rosé were harvested in a year that has become something of a benchmark, as much for the magnificent summer as for the bountiful harvest and the excellent quality of the fruit.
If you were to imagine a perfect growing season, then 2018 had all the right ingredients…from start to finish, it seemed as if every stage of growth followed on effortlessly from the last in almost unbroken conditions of warmth and sunshine.
Such was the yield potential, that we were able to manage a substantial ‘green harvest’ to remove excess fruit early on and allow what remained the best possible conditions to ripen and ensure the finest quality. That ultimately meant we were in a unique position to choose what varieties we harvested and when, selecting and picking the Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir grapes destined for the Brut Rosé at just the right moment while leaving the Chardonnay a week or two longer as we watched their sugar levels rise and rise!

Charity has long been an important part of Chilworth Manor and it remains central to our ethos today. The vineyard is committed to continue this ethos and will support Mary's Meals, a charity that aims to provide chronically hungry children with one meal every school day to encourage school attendance. This in turn improves the children's level of education that can lift them out of poverty in later life.
